[Editor's Note: Every year the Literary Staff of the Magnet receives about seven hundred contributions for the Prose and Poetry sections. Of course, all these contributions cannot be published, and the Staff has to rely on a rather complicated system of marking and judging to determine which contributions will go in. (We would like to express our thanks to Mr. B. Vance of Monarch Park Secondary School, who helped us this year by judging the finalists in the Literary Section). However, among the material which we cannot use, the proofreaders often find interesting passages - perhaps you can recognize one of your own.]

THE ROAD OF LIFE

Wearily I urge myself
    Along Life's troubled road,
Striving till I reach the end
            For heavy is my load.

The burden on my shoulders,
    Growing stronger with each step,
        Consists of sin, disloyalty,
            And promises unkept.

Tripping over foolish failures,
    Falling under strain,
        I suffer from Life's hardships
            For piercing is her pain.

The road is paved when I love,
    Rocky when I hate.
        As exhaustion fills my veins
            I rest and meditate.

In the distance shines a light
    Which signifies Life's end.
        My tired feet tread eagerly
As peace waits round the bend.
