Anyone who believes: "a miss is as good as a
mile" obviously doesn't pay much attention to
Jarvis' athletics. This "so-called miss" came again
this time with our Senior Basketball team, as they
just "missed" the City Finals.
The team, led by Dave Wood and Egons
Pilskalnietis got off to a quick start by defeating
Parkdale and Central Commerce. Eastern Commerce,
and Lawrence Park also bowed to The Mighty
Jarvis squad; both North Toronto and Northern
suffered the humiliation of being beaten twice.
Then came the first and second setbacks; the
Bulldogs were beaten by both Riverdale and
Malvern. Following the great Jarvis tradition the
team rebounded to beat Danforth and Malvern.
Egons Pilskalnietis and Dave Wood were the
stars with honorable mention going to
Rick Basillion, Dave Toman, and George Ampeff. The team
ended the season with a 8-2 record, and qualified
for the playoffs. Wood and Toman to the rescue!
The eager Seniors entered the playoffs with a two
game total-point match with Parkdale. The first
game was close and exciting; Jarvis emerged the
victor 62-59. The second game was played before
a capacity crowd at home. The game was fast
and furious but ended in a 50-50 tie. A five
minute overtime period was started but neither
team was able to break the tie. An anxious
crowd watched, not in silence as Jarvis slowly
but surely pulled away from the opposition to win
the final (and total) score Jarvis 125 - Parkdale
123. Incidentally, Dave Wood came off the bench
to play on an injured foot.
The semi-finals started the following week at
Oakwood against a highly rated Oakwood team.
A powerful and tall team, Oakwood handily
defeated Jarvis in the first game 67-38.
This humiliating defeat only spurred the team on as they
dropped a close decision 42-40.
Best scorer - Egans Pilskalnietis, second -
Dave Wood, with honorable mention to Rick
Basillion.
