The 'old' (majordomo-based) list could not
limit the amount of email directed to each subscriber.
The old list could not archive messages.
Approximately half of JCINostalgia members
responding to our subscriber survey in early November 2007
indicated that they would prefer an online group.
The original announcement message is available
here.
You need a Google account only to use the
online group facilities.
Email-only subscribers to JCINostalgia do not need an account.
Users of Gmail or other Google
services can use their existing account if their Google account's email address
matches the email address of their majordomo subscription.
Opening a Google account takes only a moment, is free,
and requires no personal information.
Visit: http://groups.google.ca/group/jcinostalgia.
Be sure to enter your email address as the one under which you're
subscribed to the list.
[Top] 4. What are the advantages of using the online facilities?
The online JCINostalgia group enables
you to control the amount of email you receive.
You may choose to receive a separate message for each posting or
be emailed a digest of each day's messages.
You may opt to receive no email at all, doing all your reading and posting online.
Other online services include posting new messages, replying
to other members' messages, uploading images, contacting
other members, viewing previous (archived) postings and even deleting
your previous postings.
Members with Google accounts can do so using the
Edit my membership panel at http://groups.google.ca/group/jcinostalgia.
(However, you might consider simply setting your email preference to
No Email, retaining your membership so you can later come back and view messages
online.)
Email-only subscribers should follow the directions in the footer
included in each message from the group.
[Top] 6. I'm still getting lots of email. What gives?
By default, you will continue to receive a copy of each message posted
to this discussion group (just as with the 'old' majordomo list).
[Top] 7. I forgot my password. Can you send it to me?
No. The JCINostalgia group is now hosted by Google and
we have no access to that information.
Please use Google's "I cannot access my account" service, available
from the
Sign In panel.
[Top] 8. Am I supposed to fill in all that Profile information?
No. Not unless you'd like to. Some members will feel more comfortable than
others about publishing this kind of information.
[Top] 9. How do I use the [specific] online group feature?
For information on using specific features in the online version
of JCINostalgia, please refer to
Google Groups Help.
[Top] 10. Where are all the messages from the old mailing list?
Unlike our 'old' mailing list, the online group does retain messages.
As part of the move from majordomo to the new online group
most of the previous postings were uploaded. These are now available
for anyone who may be interested.
[Top] 11. We could not send email attachments before. Can we now?
The 'old' majordomo list server would not pass postings with attachments.
The online discussion group will handle attachments from most email clients.
Members using the Web interface may upload files directly. Refer to
the Posting
Images page on the group site.
Email only members are confined to submitting images as email
attachments. Please bear in mind that other email only subscribers
may, in many cases, not be able to see your attachment.
However, in all cases, we enourage members to keep attachments as small as practical.
Images should normally be limited to no more than 800 pixels of width.
If you are unsure of how to reduce an image, please refer to
Reducing Your Image Size.
[Top] 12. How do I help get someone subscribed to the group?
All Jarvis alumni from the 1960s are welcome to join the group.
If you know of someone who might be interested in the discussion,
invite them to join.
Members using the Web interface may click the
Invite new members
button at the bottom of the
Members section.
The individual whose email address you enter will have to respond
to the inivitation before they can become a member.
Email only members should
send a message to the group owner
providing the name and email address of the individual
they'd like to have added.
